EMPATHY
Observations from around the Link
Joiner that captures the experience of the user as they interact with the space
Another joiner that captures the experience of the user in the space
Another joiner that captures the size of the space
USER PROFILE
The user that this project targets is the person that has been rushing from entertainment to entertainment all night long, focusing solely on their next destination. Our project is designed to force this user to slow down and appreciate the normal action of walking as something interesting that contains a meaningful narrative.
DEFINE
Rough beginning of the design statement; identifying user, location and materials
As design students, we are expected to come up with new, innovative and exciting designs.  We observed in the link that  there is almost no interaction between students going to and from class.  We, as designers, would like to design an innovative way of creating spontaneous group interaction, while providing entertainment to the individual user, transforming the mundane task of walking into an exciting and socially stimulating experience.
Starting POV statement based on observations and our user
First revision of the define statement, attempting to make it more concise
Second revision of the define statement, focusing on the core of our motivation
Third revision of the define statement, focusing on the word choice
Fourth revision of the define statement, smoothing out the remaining rough edges
Our simple design will create spontaneous interaction between people in the Link that are solely focused on their next destination by transforming the unnoticed act of walking into a suprising experience with a meaningful narrative that causes delight by engaging the senses of the user.
IDEATE
Our initial brainstorm of things that bring people together
Organization and expansion of our better ideas
Sampling of Initial Diagrams
Generalized plan of all the levels
Circulation map of the barn
Diagrams of the levels and the hallway to the barn
Sketch of the hallway leading away from an overhang
Narrowing Ideas
Expansion on better ideas based on previous brainstorm and diagrams
Expansion on Footprint Idea
Inspiration for the technology of the footprints
Diagram showing the implementation of our intervention
Sketch of project installation
Diagram of technology behind the project
Potential reaction sounds of the user stepping on the footprints
Ideas for potential footprint patterns
Brainstorming ways to make the user more aware of the act of walking
PROTOTYPE
Plan of the space in which our team intervened
Sectional drawing of the space in which our team intervened
Testing of how conductivity works with the footprints
Material for the sheet that the shadow will be projected onto
Test of potential materiality for the footprints
Another test of materiality for the footprints
Color swatch showing the blending of potential colors for the shadow video
Photo showing how the sheet was hung
Construction detail showing how the sheet was hung from the above railings
Photo showing how we smoothed out the distracting wrinkles in the sheet with a steamer
Strip of metal that was cut into pieces that will conduct for each footprint
Covering the schipboard footprints with reflective material
Setting up the wiring to connect metal strips under the footprints with the computer and makey makey
Testing the stride length of the footprints
Photo capturing the test of the speakers, computers and makey makey
Setting up the powerpoint projector along with the color video
Video that willl be projected onto the sheet that will catch the user's shadow
Picture of the space at night, showing both the footprints and the screen
TEST
Final board showing our process that was displayed at the Linked In event
View from above showing how the cords were taped to the ground
Close-up view of how shadows projected onto the screen with the colored background
View of shadows on the screen from across the Link
Picture showing the change of colors on the screen as time passes
Photo capturing the movement of different people through the space as the night progressed
